Fire Extinguisher Hydrostatic Testing
If your fire extinguisher is more than 12 years old, the NFPA and local AHJ's require you to have it hydro-tested or replaced. A fire extinguisher hydro-test will make sure the shell of your fire extinguisher has no defects or leaks that can cause it to malfunction when you need it most.
HOW TO INSPECT YOUR FIRE EXTINGUISHERS
MONTHLY INSPECTION
- Know the locations of the fire extinguishers in your area and make sure they are in the designated place.
- Make sure the type of extinguisher is safe to use on fires likely to occur in the immediate area.
- Make sure the extinguisher is not obstructed to access or visibility.
- Make sure the operating instructions on the nameplate are legible and facing outward.
- Make sure the safety seal or tamper indicator is not broken or missing.
- Make sure the extinguisher feels full by lifting or "hefting"
- Examine for any obvious physical damage.
- Make sure the pressure gauge or indicator is in the operable range or position.
